contemporary ceramic design - torso

Female torso 2004 - H:44 W:31 D:18 centimetres

This torso was modelled from clay in a life class. Once the figure had been completed, a three-part plaster mould was cast from it. The cast was used as a press mould, i.e. slabs of clay, first thrown onto the ground to create a fissured surface, were pressed into the three sections of the cast before bringing them together.

A white stoneware clay slip was brushed onto the surface of the clay body and the piece was then bisqued. A weak suspension of manganese dioxide was brushed onto the surface and wiped back with a sponge to highlight the texture before the final firing to 1100 degrees centigrade in oxidation.

The torso is available in a limited edition of 50, each signed and numbered by the artist.
